About

I'm an experimental solid state physicist working in the field of neutron, electron, and photon-based instrumentation and measurement. I have built and developed a variety of UHV photoemission spectrometers, as well as other synchrotron-based, and recently neutron-based instrumentation that is being used at different international facilities. Over six hundred experiments have been conducted in the last 15 years on instruments that I built and developed. I'm the current past-President of the Vacuum Society of Australia and am the Chair of the Congress Planning Committee and the Chair of the Welch Award Committee for the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA)

First Announcement of IVC-23

View from Sydney Zoo The Vacuum Society of Australia last year won the bid to hold IVC-23 (The 23rd International Vacuum Congress) in Sydney in 2025. This is the first time that an IVC has been held in Australia. IVC is the main  conference of IUVSTA that has a 60+ year history. It is held every three years. The next IVC, IVC-22 is to be held in Sapporo, Japan in 2022.

SYNAPSE: A roadmap to human brain imaging X-ray image reconstruction of part of the connectome of a mouse brain Just published in Physics Reports ,  SYNAPSE: An international roadmap to large brain imaging , Anton P.J. Stampfl et al. , discusses the challenges, progress, and strategies towards mapping a human brain down to the neuron level with the view of producing a full connectome of the human brain. Challenges are: >1 exabyte of data for one human brain, currently impossible to collect and analyse No present technique can image all neurons and their connections Our solution:  Coordinated multi-site use of new radiological techniques and advanced microscopies and spectroscopies For overall connection mapping: microtomography with 0.3 μm resolution in 3 dimensions and imaging at speeds >1 mm 3 /min To obtain detailed mapping in special regions: nanotomography with <10 nm resolution and cryo-electron microscopy with nm resolution For single-molecule mapping: super-resolution
